Is China Watching Your Network Security Cameras?

Hearing that title might make you think of a conspiracy theory. However, this is a very real threat that is currently affecting a huge part of the US Population.

The Federal Government has been warning the use for several years now that a very real threat is poised with some brands of network security cameras. For example, in a recent briefing, the FCC has banned HikVission along with many other white-label cameras.

This situation is so critical, the US Government has said this situation poses a “threat to the national security of the United States”

What does this mean for you and your network? According to many hours of Federal briefings and various other research, you will find that allegedly, some brands of cameras are assisting the Chinese Government to spy on American people. They watch their activity and can track them using the camera’s facial recognition features. If that is all true, think of the fallout from having an insecure camera mounted on your building, be it your home or business.

If people can be tracked on your camera system, without your knowledge, that could mean visitors to your building, place of worship, or home, could be facing issues on entry into some country based on their activity in the United States. Or Could this mean that the government takes action on their families back home based on what actions they take in the United States?

What action is needed to secure your network cameras?
First, if the camera system you have on your property is listed in the list of “covered equipment” that the US government has recently banned, you really need to look at taking that camera system off line and replacing it with a system that is secure. While this list could be actively edited by the government, as of Feb 2024 the list of equipment you need to remove from your building is as follows: ZTE Corporation, Huawei Technologies, Hytera, Hikvision, or Dahua Technologies. To add to the confusion, these companies might also be producing cameras on other names like Lorax, etc. so the federal website adds to the list ” or by any subsidiaries or affiliates of such entities”

Charlotte Data Cabling has been using Axis Camera systems for more than a decade. Axis is listed and used by the federal government. They fully conform to all US Government Requirements.
